"A Team" - By Ed Sheeran

This is a video which aims to tell a story with a message, the video follows a story of a girl who is addicted to drugs and sells magazines to feed her problem however ends up selling her body for money.

• From the establishing shot we can see the video is in black and white this gives the impression of a dull and unfulfilled life, this matches the girl we see in the establishing shot who looks depressed and exasperated



• A distorted shot helps to show a girl on drugs this is shown through a close up shot which shows the girls eyes which are dilated. The blurry distorted view gives the audience an impression of how the girl is feeling as she is on drugs.
  

  
• A mid shot is used to show the girl opening her arms and looking at the world this shows an element of freedom which contrasts her actual life and is not what the audience would expect from a homeless person
  

  
• High angle shots are used to show how the world can be very over whelming for some one like the girl in the video especially in a big city like London.
  
•  The high key lighting is used on the girl this is in order to make her stand out suggestive of her importance even though others may have differing opinions. The lyrics of this song also talks about angels "too cold outside, for angle to fly" the high key lighting can also be seen as symbolic of her angel like presence. Which also links to the name of the station in the background.
  
• Ellipsis is used to show the passing of time in this video, this helps to represent how the rest of the city is moving and is busy yet her life stays the same. This is reconstructed in the clip by the girl standing still while the traffic moves in front of her fast forwarded.  Similarly the same technique is used but with people walking this emphasizes her vulnerability because it shows the audience how alone she is.
  
  

• Head and  shoulder shots are used throughout as it allows the audience to see emotion clearly. One head and shoulder shot that stands out is one that shows the girl crying, which is enhanced by the black and white filter on the video because she has lots of black make up on.

  
• A low angle shot is used to show the girl ready to go out, the looks quite rough because she has messy hair and makeup alongside not lots of clothing as she is going out on to the streets as a prostitute, this angle can been seen to represent society and the people who might look down on her because of her life choices.

  
• Low key lighting is used again in order to highlight the girls face, the mid shot shows the audience the girls face look resentful as car pulls up as she know what she is going to have to do.

  
• An extreme close up is used to show a number of things, firstly the holes in the girls tight showing how she doesn't have very much money, it also shows the mans hand which suggests an element of vulnerability because the man is taking advantage.
  

  
• The video has a circular structure because the video starts with a close up of the girls face whilst she is lying down after having taken drugs, this is an effective technique as it allows the audience to see how addiction is a cycle which is hard to escape.

  
• Photo effects are used in order to show the girls face in the sky this further emphasizes the symbolism of her as an angel.

  

  
  
  
  
  

Textual analysis of Tove Lo- Stay High (Habits Remix) ft. Hippie Sabotage

• Throughout the music video "Stay High" they use the same camera shot "shot to camera" to show the audience her night and let them whiteness it. It also allows the audience to view on how the drugs affect her.

•   They use a hand held camera, the hand held camera is used to enhance the drunk and 'messy' effect that the video is trying to portray.

• A slow motion effect is used to enhance the idea of her being on drugs and the time passing slowly

 

• The constant closing of the girls eyes further enhances the effects of the drugs to suggest she is high which refers to the title “Stay High”

• Ellipses is used to create the effect of time passing. In addition, this gives the impression that the drugs are speeding up the girls heart rate and activity. This helps enhance the narrative theme.

• The fast cuts create the fast party atmosphere.

 

A fish eye camera effect is used to show her distorted view.


• Slow motion cuts intertwined with fast cuts used constantly throughout, complement each other and highlight different stages and effects of the drug.

• Tracking shots are used to further the image of her looking confused and lost as she swinges her head in slow motion from side to side.

• High angle shots are used to suggest that the drug is overpowering the girl and has control of her body and mind.

• The hand held camera moves with her body showing us and giving us a sense of how the drug is affecting her.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Textual Analysis- “You&Me” By Disclosure

 

The video is about a young couple who are traveling around Europe, this makes the video a narration of their travels.

       The song “you and me” is a dance track which works well with the narration because it helps to represent their young age.

•        Two shots are used throughout. This enables us as the audience to see the couples close relationship; this also further suggests that the video is going to be about them.

 



·       An extreme long shot is used where by the couple are looking out to sea. This is effective because it shows the setting to be on a boat, presumably leaving the country suggesting the start of the couples adventure together. In addition, this fits with the music genre of dance because this genre of music is usually perceived as upbeat and exciting.

 

·         Slow motion special effects are used to show the time slowed down this is an effective technique because it shows the couple enjoying the moment.

·       Tracking shots are used to show the movement of the car they are in. This is an effective way to show the physical journey they are making as a couple, however connotes the journey of love and friendship they are making in throughout their relationship.

·       Low angle shots are used to look up at the couple so that you can see the sky scrapers above them, revealing the busy city life. Again the aspect of sight seeing or living in a city fits in with the genre of exciting up beat music.

·         Shallow depth of field is used in this video to show the daunting backdrop of an unknown city but due to the focus on the couple it shows that they have each other and are ready to enjoy this experience.

·         The video throughout shows the boy doing exciting tricks in unusual places this emphasizes dance music as a fun beat genre, it also re- enforces the fact that the couple are still young keeping the video fun and relatable to the audience.

 

·       Throughout the video there are adult themes; for example drinking, smoking and sexual scenes this helps to fit in with the genre of music as dance is stereotypically listened to by young adults.
